The Al Ludwig Memorial Fund carries forward the extraordinary legacy of a teacher, coach, mentor, and friend who devoted much of his life to young people and the Ligonier Valley community. Affectionately known as “Chief,” Al Ludwig spent 38 years in the Ligonier Valley School District, influencing generations of students through education, athletics, extracurricular activities, mentorship, and friendship.

Al taught industrial arts, wood shop, architectural drafting, and design. He sponsored student activities including archery, fly tying, wood carving, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and helped develop the technology education curriculum at Ligonier Valley Middle School.

His influence extended well beyond the classroom. Al coached wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball, track, and golf, served as athletic director, and helped bring junior Olympic wrestling to Ligonier. In 1978, he coached John Chendy to a Pennsylvania State Championship in wrestling—the only wrestler in Ligonier Valley High School history to win a state championship title.

Most importantly, Al was known for the way he treated people. He had a remarkable ability to make others feel valued and willingly shared his time, energy, knowledge, and compassion with those around him.

His was truly A Life Well Lived.

Today, the Al Ludwig Memorial Fund continues that spirit by investing in young people, education, recreation, athletics, and charitable initiatives throughout the region.

Al Ludwig Memorial Fund Scholarship
