The Top 57 Christian Music Artists and Bands of the 1980s

The 1980s were a turning point for 80’s Christian Music. What had once been a niche, church-only industry exploded into a movement. A fully formed cultural movement. Now Christian artists were not just confined to church choirs and hymns, they were breaking out and recording rock albums. They were selling out arenas, Charting on Billboard and in a lot of cases getting playtime on Mainstream Radio.

I was there for all of it. At the turn of the decade, I was a student in 7th grade looking for an alternative and did I every find one! I was there for the birth of Petra, Whiteheart, Michael W. Smith and Steve Taylor. I went to concerts and festivals and heard dozens of artists. It was a wonderful time for Christian Music.

Christian Music

The 1980’s gave birth to Christian rock, metal, pop, worship, gospel crossover, and alternative music. For me, it laid the foundation for all that followed in the 90’s and beyond. During these years as a Youth Pastor, I had the privilege of introducing a whole new generation to Christian Music. The music of the 80’s paved the way for bands like DC Talk, The Newsboys, Jars of Clay, Audio Adrenaline and many more. In my opinion, these two decades were formative in the world of music.

Below is a my definitive, decade-focused list of the 57 best and most influential Christian artists and bands of the 1980s based 100 Percent on my opinion and their overall success and impact.

What Happened Before the 1980’s?

  • Most Christian music was largely church centered
  • Distribution was limited and large concerts were usually limited to the secular
  • Rock and pop styles were often controversial in Christian circles and associated with the Jesus Movement

My Opinion is that without the 1970s:

  • There is no Christian rock acceptance in the 1980’s
  • There is no Contemporary Christian Music Industry
  • There is no modern worship movement
  • There is no space for honest, faith-driven songwriting

The 1970’s literally laid the spiritual and artistic foundation for what was to come. And the explosion of music that would come a decade later amplified everything that came before. You could say that the 1970’s gave Christian music its soul and the 1980s gave it momentum. Together, they defined its future.

Christian Rock, Hard Rock & Metal

The 1980’s were the quite literally the golden age of Christian Rock and Metal. Up until then, I had never heard a band or artist that rivaled what was found in the secular world. Christian Music could not compete with the huge rock bands of that generation. Then EVERYTHING changed. We heard bands with incredible talent and Christian Lyrics. And we played them LOUD. Mom and Dad couldn’t object because at least we weren’t playing AC/DC or Ozzy. The Spirit of the Music was uplifting even if you couldn’t understand the words all the time. These Bands quite literally rocked. Here are the 12 Best in the Rock and Metal Category.

Contemporary Christian, Popular Music

These are the BIG names, the ones that literally defined radio success and mainstream crossover in the 80’s. Most of them started small in the 70’s and by my formative Years were bigger than life. We loved going to their concerts. I can remember the Christian Music Festivals at Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and Magic Mountain. Southern California was the epicenter of Contemporary Christian Music. Here are some of the biggest and best names, many of whom are still out there singing and producing new albums.
