It has been officially announced that there will be a new series in the Stargate Franchise. I have chosen the title and it is called Stargate Exile. There have been many fan ideas over the years regarding what a new Stargate Series would look like, but I have never see one that honors the legacy of the stories and characters. This one does. Enjoy reading about what should be the next Stargate Series.
Stargate: Exile – A New Chapter Begins
A Galaxy at Peace… Until It Wasn’t
Fourteen years have passed since the city of Atlantis last touched down on Earth, and twelve years since the crew of the Destiny vanished into the depths of space. For over a decade, the Milky Way has known an uneasy but genuine peace. Old enemies have faded into legend. Ancient threats have gone silent. The Stargate Program itself has quietly slipped into obscurity, its heroes scattered into civilian lives, military desk jobs, and hard-earned retirements.
Peace, it turns out, was only an intermission.
When Stargate Exile begins, We are immediately reunited with the two most important characters of the beloved franchise: Jack O’Neill and Samantha Carter. They have been married and settled for many years now and they are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary. A perfect opening for the show. Jack and Sam are sitting in a nice romantic restaurant with music playing and the lights dimmed. They talk about how fast time has gone and how peaceful things have become. They converse with the banter we expect. It is a heartwarming moment for them and for the fans of Stargate… Until all hell breaks loose.
The World They Left Behind
After the Battle of Earth and the dramatic arrival of Atlantis in San Francisco Bay, the future of the city became a matter of intense global debate. Returning Atlantis to Pegasus risked reopening old wounds. Leaving it active on Earth risked destabilizing the planet politically and technologically.
The compromise was classic Stargate pragmatism.
The decision was made and Atlantis was relocated to a shallow, remote body of water and quietly mothballed. Officially abandoned. Unofficially… watched.
Unknown to the International Oversight Advisory (IOA), a small group chose not to let the city die.
This Group Consisted of Daniel Jackson, Teal’c. and Radek Zelenka.
Believing Atlantis would be needed again someday, they secretly reactivated the city beneath the waves, maintaining its systems, upgrading its infrastructure, and keeping its Ancient heart beating. Shielded by a Zero Point Module capable of sustaining the city for centuries, Atlantis slept – waiting.
ALTERNATE BUT SIMILAR CONCEPT: At the end of Stargate Atlantis, the crew landed the city in San Francisco Bay and basically went their separate ways. After a long discussion of what to do with the city, debates about going back to Pegasus, the decision was made by the IOA to leave Atlantis on earth in a different location – shallow water – and then eventually the project was mothballed and sent to the bottom of the sea on earth with the agreement that a small skeleton crew would remain to monitor the city and continue the research project. This crew included Daniel Jackson, Teal’C (as he had no place else exciting to go) and Zelenka chose to remain in the city as well as a couple of others – no more than half a dozen total. Knowing that they may be needed again someday, the team has kept an extremely low profile and has spent their time upgrading the city.
Life After Stargate
The galaxy moved on, and so did its heroes.
Jack O’Neill and Samantha Carter finally chose the life that duty had long denied them. Married and settled, they are introduced celebrating a milestone anniversary – a quiet moment of reflection on how fast time passes when the fighting stops.
John Sheppard has been also laying low since Atlantis, but keeping busy with his “boring” military job. He does test flights for the new 302’s and other ships, but there hasn’t been an incursion for a while, so not a whole lot to do. He is the one that gets first warning of the unknown alien invaders that enter the system, but they come so quickly and with such finality that they completely overwhelm the planet’s defenses. Sheppard barely escapes with his life and crash lands near his home in Colorado.
A great plot twist will come soon: John Sheppard is the only one that really knows where everyone is and what everyone is doing. When the team snuck into Atlantis, John helped them, but didn’t stay with them. When he left, he “borrowed” a jumper and has been keeping it secret ever since. We are re-introduced to Sheppard in dramatic fashion and the jumper will be a big reveal in the season opener when he rescues O’Neal and Carter from the restaurant using the cloaked jumper and takes them to Rodney’s place.
Rodney McKay and Jennifer Keller withdrew from public life altogether. Married on Atlantis after its return to Earth, they built a secluded ranch far from civilization and over time they have become more and more recluse. They enjoy a quiet life, but in Rodney fashion there is more under the surface. Beneath the couple’s ranch lies a hidden scientific bunker, decades of research… and Rodney’s ultimate contingency plan and prized possession: a fully charged Zero Point Module, saved for a day he hoped would never come.
While Teyla Emmagan went back to the Pegasus Galaxy, Ronan Dex stayed on Earth for a simple reason: he liked it. Over the years Ronan became something of a legend, a shadowy protector, helping people who had nowhere else to turn. Needless to say, when John Sheppard gets back to his house after the crash of his 302, he wishes out loud “I could really use Ronan about now” or something to that effect and Ronan answers because he is sitting on his couch waiting for him. When the galaxy finally broke again, Ronan was already where he needed to be.
And Todd the Wraith? Todd was granted quiet exile on Earth for his role in ending the Wraith threat. No longer needing to feed and no longer hunted, he disappeared into the Australian outback. Over a decade, he built an empire – financial, industrial, and technological. Todd the Wraith will play an integral part in the series, especially the pilot because he controls the remaining ZPM needed to get Atlantis into orbit and away from earth on full power. Fortunately for our team he has managed to somehow acquire more than one ZPM over the last decade and has kept that fact hidden from “almost everyone”.
The Fall of Earth
The Restaurant
We return to the moment when all hell breaks loose: Jack and Sam on their 10th Anniversary. Candlelight. Music. A World at Peace. Then an overwhelming alien force descends on Earth with surgical precision and unimaginable firepower. Cities fall in minutes. Defenses collapse almost instantly. A green planetary shield seals the world beneath an impenetrable dome.
Out the window of the restaurant the entire sky lights up with the overwhelming invasion. Green fire similar to the weapons of the renegade Asgard is used. But it is different than the weapons of a decade ago. Somehow the Rogue Asgard escaped and have evolved a ridiculous amount over the last decade. We are talking about overwhelming firepower with flat, spread beam technology with the technological ability to render the defenses of earth useless.
The invaders are revealed to be a splinter faction of the Asgard – The Vanir Continuum – survivors who rejected sacrifice and coexistence. In their view, organic civilizations are too dangerous to be free.
Their doctrine is simple: Preservation through dominion.
Earth is not destroyed. It is contained. Studied. Broken.
When the invading force enters the restaurant in overwhelming numbers, and start obliterating the patrons Carter and O’Neill know they are done for. An armed squad confronts them, Jack is in front of Carter protecting her, all he has is a sidearm, she of course pulls a knife from a hidden location. It won’t be enough. “Are these the ones?” The squad commander asks. “Eliminate them now.” The moment they are ready to pull the trigger, a bolt from Ronan’s gun blasts the enemy with Sheppard behind him shooting away. They can’t take them out – too powerful – but they buy enough time for the 4 of them to escape via… John’s cloaked jumper. Flying out just in time. “Great, we escaped, now what?” says O’Neill. John quickly explains the planetary situation and then says “We go see Rodney.” Thus begins the great reunion until they are all together again on Atlantis back in the Pegasus galaxy.
The Ranch
The Four Fly the jumper to Rodney and Jennifer’s ranch. Stories are exchanged and everyone is briefed. Since the goal by the end of the series premiere is to fly the city away from earth to escape the invaders – 3 zero point modules will be needed. One is already in the city of Atlantis, one will be revealed to be in Rodney’s possession at the correct moment. The Third ZPM will have to come from somewhere else.
So they meet up with Rodney and after a we have another reunion. The group begins to develop a plan. Now at this point only Sheppard knows about Daniel Jackson and Teal’c and what has been transpiring on Atlantis, but most thought they just disappeared. Of course, when the conversation comes up with the team at Rodney’s ranch that the mission is to find two more ZPM’s so they can take them to Atlantis and get the city flying again, Rodney chooses this moment to disclose that he has one. The look on their faces is priceless. But they still need one more. Rodney comments in his typical skepticism “Even if we can get to Atlantis, we don’t know its condition or if we can get it operational.” John replies with a simple answer: “I might have a surprise for you.”
The Compound
That is when Sheppard says he thinks he knows exactly where to find it. They will go see Todd and get his ZPM. So they take the jumper to his compound in Australia and decloak. After the much awaited greeting from Todd to “John Sheppard”, it is obvious that Todd doesn’t want to give up his empire but is willing to make a deal for one of his ZPM’s – They explain to him that no matter his money or defenses or resources, he will not survive. At that moment the invaders attack and Todd gets them to agree to take him along for the ride back to Pegasus. When he goes to get the ZPM, it is revealed that he has 2 of them. They grab them and they all leave in a now very crowded jumper as Todd’s compound is obliterated by the invaders.
Atlantis in Exile
So begins the Journey to Atlantis. Seven of our favorite characters in a cloaked jumper headed to a city that was supposedly mothballed a decade ago. Sheppard pilots the jumper to the location and takes it underwater. They arrive expecting a city that will need to be revived, but they find a city active and ready to move.
This is a great and exciting reveal. As the jumper docks and the passengers enter the city, they are met in a long awaited reunion with Daniel Jackson, Teal’c and Radek Zelenka. SG1 is back together again and the Atlantis team is only missing one member. Stories are told but time is of the essence. If they can’t break free of earth before they are discovered, they probably aren’t going to get very far.
Writer’s Note: These reunions work because each encounter is a surprise to the audience as well as the characters. When Sheppard and Ronan show up, it is a reveal for the viewer. The same happens with Rodney and Jennifer, Todd, and the group on Atlantis. Slowly the teams are coming together in an epic finale of the pilot episode. The Rodney and Zelenka reunion is priceless and seeing the four main characters from the original series together again is the biggest payoff in Stargate history.
They have to fly the city out after the 3 ZPM’s are installed and they escape earth’s atmosphere in a tense moment as the green shield of the Rogue Asgard slowly envelopes the globe behind them. With seconds to spare and the invaders closing in, Atlantis rises from beneath Earth’s oceans and vanishes into hyperspace. The obvious destination is back to Pegasus because that is where they my find more allies, but they decide not to go back to the original planet because it might be watched. They find an uncharted planet on the edge of the system and there, on a vast inland lake, the city comes to rest once more.
Atlantis becomes a city in exile.
A New Kind of Stargate Story
Stargate: Exile is not a story about survival. It is a story about rebuilding.
From Atlantis, a new coalition begins to form — humans, former enemies, and ancient races united not by fear, but by necessity. A council rises. Alliances are forged. Exploration resumes.
The goal is no longer simply to step through the Stargate. The goal is to take the galaxy back, and for the first time in a very long time, the fight will require more than a four-person team. This is the beginning of Stargate: Exile.
