If you’re the kind of Stargate fan who actually cares about internal logic and watching events unfold the way they happened, this is the path. This path is what is known as the Canon Timeline. It’s not the simplest order, but it is the most correct one. And yes, it requires a little channel-surfing discipline. Totally worth it.
Start Where It All Began
Everything begins with the original Stargate (1994). I never got to see this in the theater because in 1994 I was young and newly married and had one kid and one on the way, so movies and free time was not in my normal routine. Looking back, it would have been great to see this on the big screen.
Directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, this film is the foundation stone. No skipping. No shortcuts. This is ground zero for the entire franchise.
My opinion? There has never been another movie theme that so accurately re-cast the same stars into a TV series with the same success. It was seamless on the transition, and they even joked about it off and one throughout the series.
You have now watched the original move, so from there, you roll directly into Stargate SG-1. Even though the show debuted in 1997, the story only jumps forward about a year. Watch straight through the first 7 Seasons without any interruption. This sets the table for everything that follows.
When the Timeline Splits (and Gets Interesting)
Things really click into high gear with Season 8 of SG-1, because this is where Stargate Atlantis enters the picture. Plus, the cast of SG-1 begins to evolve slightly with some of our favorite characters taking on lesser roles but maintaining the integrity of the franchise.
Atlantis and SG-1 were shows designed to run side-by-side, not one after the other. Same writers’ room. Same long-game planning. Same Friday-night sci-fi dominance.
Here’s how it lines up and this is the absolute and correct way to watch the franchise. Now stay with me here:
- SG-1 Season 8 Coincides with Atlantis Season 1
- SG-1 Season 9 Coincides with Atlantis Season 2
- SG-1 Season 10 Coincides with Atlantis Season 3
Back in the day that these seasons aired on the Sci Fi Channel it was a legendary lineup. This was back when TV was worth watching. Stargate for two hours followed by Battlestar Galactica, a darker and edgier show to say the least. Here was the rundown:
- SG-1 at 8pm
- Atlantis at 9pm
- Battlestar Galactica at 10pm
Pure magic.
IMPORTANT: This is How to Alternate Without Breaking Up the Story
Start SG-1 Season 8 with the two-part opener “New Order.” Watch both episodes together like a mini-movie.
Then jump to Atlantis’ pilot, “Rising,” which was intentionally set up by “New Order.” After that, the rhythm is simple:
- Watch an SG-1 episode
- Then the corresponding Atlantis episode
- Example: 8×03 → 1×03, 8×04 → 1×04, and so on
This pattern holds beautifully through the season. Hopefully you are following this, but there is a cheat sheet at the bottom when you are done that should make things rather clear for you. Print it out and put it on the fridge or tape it where you are going to be watching the Franchise. You don’t want to mess this up. Here is one Critical Watch Order Rule you cannot skip:
Make Sure You Watch “Moebius, Part 2” (SG-1 Season 8 finale) before “The Siege, Part 2” (Atlantis Season 1 finale).
Trust me. The Atlantis finale quietly assumes you’ve already seen what SG-1 just changed.
Now You Keep the Alternating Flow Going
Continue alternating:
- SG-1 Season 9 ↔ Atlantis Season 2
- SG-1 Season 10 ↔ Atlantis Season 3
Watch two-parters together whenever they appear. Most crossover references are subtle… until late SG1 Season 10, where one major crossover finally steps out of the shadows.
The Movie Interlude (This Part Matters)
Once you finish Stargate SG1 Season 10, don’t move forward yet. I know you will want to keep going on with Atlantis, and the temptation is strong, but there are two films that were created for SG1 which follow the 10 Season Arc. Here are the two films:
- Stargate: The Ark of Truth
- Stargate: Continuum
Watch The Ark of Truth immediately after the SG-1 finale. The finale is titled Unending and is by far one of my favorite episodes in the entire franchise. No spoilers here though! Maybe I will rank my top 10 favorite episodes in another article and tell you why… but only AFTER you watch them of course! The Ark of Truth closes the book on the Ori arc and directly impacts Atlantis as well.
Only then should you return to Atlantis Season 4 and watch this whole season through in it’s entirety. There is one more deviation that I know you are waiting for…
After Atlantis Season 5, Episode 1 (“Search and Rescue”), Stargate Continuum fits cleanly into the timeline. Watch that movie here, then finish the rest of Atlantis Season 5.
The Final Chapter (For Now)
Once Atlantis concludes, move on to Stargate Universe. It runs for two seasons and takes the franchise in a darker, more serialized direction. Between you and I, Universe was my least favorite part of the entire franchise and I have only watched it through once. There were some things that just didn’t make sense to me. Again, no spoilers from me, but I have thoughts to share at some point.
I will give you a fair warning though:
Stargate Universe was designed as a five-year story arc but it ends on a cliffhanger after 2 seasons. This is a huge wound in the Franchise because it was a cancellation and not a resolution like all of the other series in the franchise. It is still absolutely worth watching though and far superior to a lot of the other science fiction crappy television out there.
Congratulations! You Have Completed the Entire Canon Timeline of This Amazing Franchise and are Ready for the Next Iteration!
With this revealed, you can watch it all in the correct order from start to finish. There are some other adventures in Stargate Lore if you want to delve into the animated series or the literary world, but these are not essential.
You are now ready for Stargate Exile when it launches soon! Of course, Exile is MY interpretation of what SHOULD happen, not the new series that will be produced, but one can hope that my ideas will gain momentum and traction in the future.
