Enter the Digital Art we call NFTs
If you do not know what an NFT is, then let’s give you an overview. A NFT (non-fungible token) is a unique digital asset. This is similar to a JPEG image file, MP3 audio file or MP4 video file. Or PNG image file, or the like. It is then located and stored on a digital ledger called a blockchain. Learn more about the Blockchain in our Category of Blockchain Innovation Here.
These files are tokenised. Which means that it is data, and this data is transformed into a random string of code. The records (blocks) contain a timestamp and details of the previous block. This then is forming a chain of data that cannot be modified without altering all subsequent blocks. This means they are not interchangeable (fungible). Allowing the “token” to therefore represents ownership of the asset.
We have seen these NFT (such a new thing right now) gain incredible values. And we have seen them loose incredible values as well. Though it is a growing area where artists are becoming and accessing income for their creations. Something to be aware as NFTs are being used in all sorts of ways in addition to Art and Creations.
