Now to Answer That Age Old Question: Which Christmas Movie is Best?
No Need for an Answer Page Here. Of Course it is The Lord of the Rings Trilogy!

I am sure that at some point in the discussion about Christmas Movies, you heard the Lord of the Rings mentioned in the conversation. It is only natural and I can give you many reasons why! This isn’t just because they are among my favorite movies, it is a legitimate discussion. My goal today is to help you understand why this is obviously the number one choice for Christmas Movies.
Firstly, we can all agree that The Lord of the Rings and this time of year seem made for each other. But why is this the Case? I enjoy watching this series at least once every couple of years, and I even got my lovely wife Rhonda on board as a huge fan (The extended editions with all of the Appendices sold her). So I will endeavor to explain my reasoning. By the way, just writing this page made me put LOTR on the schedule for Christmas 2025.
10 Reasons The Lord of the Rings is a Christmas Movie!
1. Elves

This one is pretty obvious. Both Santa’s Workshop and Middle Earth both have elves. Do I really need to explain this? I am not even going to elaborate on this point because right now you should just be nodding and saying “that makes sense, let’s get to the next point.” So, here we go!
2. Jolly Old Magical Being with a White Beard

What if I told you to picture this: A kindly old figure with a white beard and a conical hat. Jolly laugh. Accompanied by elves. Has a famous steed that bears him around the world. Loves little people. Who comes to mind first? Santa or Gandalf?
I mean, remember how happy the little hobbit children are to see their friend Gandalf return again to the Shire… bringing them gifts? Remind you of any other children who get excited this time of year? Just saying.
3. Snow, snow and more snow!

Remember that Brutal Trek across the Misty Mountains? More snow than anybody wanted. And what says Christmas quite like snow? Every good Christmas movie has to have snow in it.
I know, the fact that there is snow doesn’t make the LOTR a Christmas Movie, but it is just one more ingredient in the big picture here. And wait until you find out what date the Fellowship Crossed the Misty Mountains?
4. Trees Central to Both The Lord of the Rings and Christmas

Can you imagine Christmas without Christmas trees? Of course not! This may be the most common thing seen in homes across America and even around the world during the holiday season.
So what about The Lord of the Rings without trees? Wait, don’t even try to imagine that, you’ll summon the angry ghost of Tolkien himself with such blasphemy! The Ents and other Trees were an integral part of the Story of the Fellowship and played a huge part in the Battle of Middle Earth. This is something that should be quite obvious.
5. So. Many. Songs.
Look, if you’ve only seen the movies and not read the books this one might not jump out as much but the JRR Tolkien never, and I mean NEVER missed a chance to have a character break out into song. It happened ALL the time in the books. So much so that some people (not me) just skip the songs when they are reading because they’re that frequent. But music is a staple of both the Christmas season and also The Lord of the Rings. So much so that it inspires frequent parody. Here is a great article if you are up for something a little sacrilegious around the Christmas Season:
Peace On Middle-earth, Good-will Toward Men, Elves, and Dwarves
6. Each member of the Fellowship receives a gift in Lothlórien
Elves distributing presents to little people? I’m sorry but if you’re not seeing it I can’t help you here.
7. The Fellowship departs Rivendell on December 25th – What?
Yes, it’s true. Personally, I find this to be one of the strongest and most convincing pieces of evidence for The Lord of the Rings being a Christmas Movie. Tolkien set the date of the departure of the Fellowship as December 25th, though it isn’t mentioned in the text of the story itself. Rather, you have to go through the dates in Appendix B of The Lord of the Rings to find this bit of information. You can look it up. Is this just a coincidence that Tolkien decided to use this day in the story?
I don’t think so. The journey of the Fellowship very intentionally mirrors that of the life of Christ. The Fellowship is born on Christmas Day, contains a prophet-priest-king triad composed of Gandalf who is a wise heavenly being who has become – dare I say – incarnate and is resurrected. Frodo is an innocent suffering sacrifice given up for all, and Aragorn is the returning king. The Fellowship accomplishes its mission on March 25th, a traditional date for the Crucifixion in history. Tolkien himself acknowledged that his faith had influenced his work at both the unconscious and the conscious levels and this alignment of dates is too careful to be coincidence.
8. The movies were released each year in December

This reason is more grounded in the real world. Of course Tolkien never imagined the movies as we love them, let alone a release schedule for said movies. But it just seems like a good time to watch the Trilogy because that is when Peter Jackson released them in theaters, in December. That is when we first saw them!
And not only were the movies first released in December: the extended editions of the films were first released the following November (Fellowship and Two Towers) or December (The Return of the King) as well! So in December 2001 we experienced this interpretation of Middle-earth for the first time and then in December 2002 you probably watched the extended edition of Fellowship again to prep before seeing The Two Towers, then in December 2003 watched the first two to prep for ROTK. Having gotten into the habit, many of us have simply never stopped watching the trilogy in many of or all of the subsequent Decembers.
9. The Lord of Gifts

When Sauron took a “fair” appearance and deceived the men of Númenor and the elves of Eregion, he took the name Annatar, which means “Lord of Gifts.” Remind you of anyone?? Okay, this is just kind of a fun little piece of Trivia that you get to hear about.
And I was able to share this great post that I found (Mostly it was an excuse to share the post) but the fact still exists that Sauron was the Lord of Gifts and he gave the rings away, and really… who else besides me thinks that Santa is a little creepy sometimes as well?
10. When Else Are You Going To Marathon a 12hr Movie??
To end on a purely practical note, all the time many of us have off from work and together with family provides the perfect opportunity to tackle all three movies (extended editions, of course!) in a row in a way that simply doesn’t come around that often. What better way then to spend a rare day off when all the family is together than by watching LOTR?
So there you have it: 10 Reasons The Lord of the Rings is a Christmas Movie. Enjoy your LOTR marathon if you haven’t already this Holiday Season. I know we will! Now go to the Answer Page to see why The Terminator and Groundhog Day are also Christmas Movies. Then somebody needs to buy me this shirt:
